The cost of cataract surgery can vary. There are generally three components:
- Surgeon Fee
- Facility Fee (hospital, office or surgery center)
- Anesthesia Fee (CRNA or MDA)
for the first many surgeons will offer discounts in exchange for the promise of volume. This is the process of contracting. For example most surgeons charge 1500-4500 for their fee but will accept as low as $600 from Medicare for the same professional services.
The facility fee can be quite expensive and is generally higher than the surgeon’s fee. Hospitals can charge up to $20,000 for the ten minute procedure. They have a very high cost structure with staff, facility, equipment and supply costs. A surgery center fee is generally half of that. The Medicare reimbursement is about 1800 for the hospital and 1000 for the surgery center.
The anesthesia services can be provided by the surgeon, a specially trained nurse or a specially trained medical doctor. Again the fees vary. If provided by the surgeon, there is generally not an additional fee. Medicare pays the anesthetist and anesthesiologist the same fee, about $100.
So, if you are uninsured or underinsured, your starting point if you are a negotiator would be the Medicare rates. If you are interested in vision correction services at the same time as you have your cataract removed, expect to pay more for these services.
If you are willing to travel (medical tourism), we have bundled (surgeon fee, facility fee and anesthesia fee) fees of
$4000 for cataract surgery with a standard lens implantation and
$5500 with a vision correcting lens (Technis Multifocal, Restor Multifocal, Crystalens Accomodative Lens).
These fees will be honored in Las Vegas or Evansville, IN and are subject to change. Print out this page to qualify for these rates.
